if you have time to answer this.. how did you select the base color for STEP 4? did you pick a color out of the background, or do you find that selecting a grey-type color works best for multiply?

I don't know if this is able in PS, but in Sai, you can make the color layer as overlay instead. It gives another effect :)

That's what it's supposed to do. Because it's color on color, it is going to be darker than possibly intended. Maybe try a lighter shading color? ^^

Use Gimp...it has quite all the capabilities as photoshop and is just for free.

if i could manage to keep myself at it for that long, I'm sure I'd be able to make stunning art, but I'm afraid that won't happen anytime soon. XD

*shrug* things happen. I'm just hoping that I can learn patience over some time. (That's probably never going to happen. XD)

and the funny thing about pixel art, is the more I do, the worse they end up looking. maybe I'm just rushing them as I go. XD

haha I get what you mean. For me the sketch starts looking great, color is decent, and by the end of all those hours it looks completely off from what was intended :P Now it takes forever for me to complete one piece! ^^"

This is pretty enlightening. :u I want to try your technique for shading; I usually just leave the colored layer and do some really quick shading over the top with multiply. This ought to take longer but I think it looks a lot prettier the way you do it. :>
