OLD: How to Draw Big Cats Part 1 by TamberElla OLD: How to Draw Big Cats Part 1 by TamberElla
2014 update: This is quiiiiite old and while I wouldn't recommend trying to learn too much from it, it's kinda cool to look at and does point out some subtle differences between the species. Please; go study from photos! This is a very rough, wonky, specific guide!

Keep in mind that this cannot teach you to draw bigs cats! The purpose of this is simply to show the subtle differences between each species. To learn to draw big cats, you need look at plenty of references, go to zoos, study muscle and bone structure, and practice a lot!
nonetheless, i hope you find this helpful! :aww:

i really like this, but i have to point out that lions' noses arent always brown or black. the color of their nose determines their age so the darker it is the older they are which means cubs and young lions have pinkish or light tannish noses..... im sorry im a smart@$$ DX but i couldnt help but say something.... Again I think this tutorial is awesome....

Would you believe that there are no other how-to's for panthers on deviantART? And yours is extremely informative. I wouldn't mind a complete tutorial, like the lion one, for panthers, you're very good at cats.
Nin-Ei Featured By Owner Jun 21, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Jaguars are the same as panthers, so I bet you could find a good jaguar tutorial to tell you what you want to know. =)

I feel so happy xD you lead me out of the deep scary darkness of not knowin' how to come near to a realistic cat face, with your turtorials! *___*

can I call you master, master?? TAT
Yumeless Featured By Owner Dec 19, 2011
Thank you for this amazing tuto. ^o^

But I have one question. You call your panther a "black jaguar". But isn't the black panther a "black leopard" instead?
I know that the black jaguar can also be called "black panther" but it has the same anatomy than a regular jaguar, it's the same species. So, I'm a little confused about what is really your panther here.

Sorry to distrub you with that. ^^"

(and just a little last thing. "Uncia Uncia" is the old name of the snow panther. Now it's also a "panthera", so it's new name is "Panthera Uncia")
Toyoue Featured By Owner Dec 20, 2011  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Actually, something I just learned recently. xD The "Black Panther" is any black form of Leopard, Jaguar or Cougar.
