6 Years Improvement by TamberElla 6 Years Improvement by TamberElla
Here's a little image putting together the old and new versions of this painting. I'll definitely want to re-paint this again in another 6 years ;)

I think it's important to remember that if you feel like you're struggling with an artistic subject, it takes a long long time to really learn anything. They don't say ten thousand hours for no reason. But the important thing is to truly love the journey every step of the way. You can make beautiful, important, significant art all along your journey. You aren't biding your time waiting to have the skills you need to make important art; you're making important art every day. I can't wait to see where this journey takes me 6 years from now! :)

Thank you all so much for coming along the ride with me!

UPDATE:
TigerSaturated by TamberElla
A lot of people have commented that they miss the saturation from the original. I feel I should explain that in this piece, I was reacting in part to the comment I received often from teachers and mentors that I over-rely on saturation and contrast to achieve impact in a piece. I think it's a fair assessment of where my art was, and the direction it sometimes still tends to go. In this re-do, I aimed to practice restraint, and avoid falling into that same pattern, mainly for my own edification. But you are welcome to prefer the original! And there's definitely a lot to say for how much people love color and mood, and how much it reaches an audience. So here is I think a happy medium! I'm still satisfied with the restraint, but have taken into account the desire for more of that fuzzy warm mood from the original!

You really understand the structure of the form better -that's the kind of improvement that comes with lots of hard work. Keep it up, I also can't wait to see what you produce in the future!

It's so impressive! I look at the 2011 and it's great. Beautiful, powerful, striking, maybe a little too powerful. Then I look at the 2017, and it's better! Beautiful, powerful, striking, and incredibly realistic. I love seeing your progress. You obviously work so hard.

I'm sorry that so many people are trying to belittle your improvement; it's tremendously obvious in my eyes.  I get those comments every time I share a redraw of an older piece (on my main account) and it hurts, but you seem very wise from the way you respond to them.

No, I would say it was improvement. The detail of the fur is incredible on the new version and it looks a lot less two-dimensional. The second looks incredibly realistic, and the first looks like it was going for realism but missed by just a smudge.

Nope. Notice the better understanding of the tiger's form and overall values on the bottom image.
Definitely improvement.

By 'better understanding of the tiger's form' you mean 'no longer symmetrical'. The original picture was done from a right orthographic view rather than from a perspective angle, which again, is a stylized choice.

No clue what you mean by 'values'.

Values as in lights and shadows! Level of detail and rendering has improved quite a lot too. Just look at that fur! If that's not improvement to you, then what is?

I agree, the second image is by far more 'realistic' looking, but making something more realistic doesn't necessarily 'improve' it. When you improve on your artstyle, things like proportions and consistency come to mind. Not so much color choices, poses or photo-realism. I think this was a sidestep, both pictures are great, but they are different, they look like they were drawn by two different people. One going for a photorealistic look, they other going for a stylized look.

I should also clarify that photo-realism (in terms of drawing, not so much 3d rendering) is by far more difficult. So if we are talking about 'improvement' in terms of difficulty of the task, than yes, it's an improvement.

"You aren't biding your time waiting to have the skills you need to make important art; you're making important art every day"

THIS, is such a powerful statement. I find to often artists tear down their art for not being "good enough right now". And it always makes me sad! Someone I know always said to me "Enjoy where you are at". Life becomes so much better when you can just enjoy where you are right now in life!

This is beautiful! And I am glad that I get to see your art, and that you share your passion with the world. Thank you for always trying to put the best energy out there that you can, it is truly refreshing!

This may be an unpopular opinion and take this with a grain of salt since I'm not anywhere near your level xD

But I feel like the top one is better in terms of atmosphere, whereas the bottom is beautifully rendered but lacks the same punch as the top one.  I feel like with just an overlay and a bit of yellow the newer one could have the same effect, even if it's not as realistic. I took the liberty of just doing this(I hope you don't mind ^^;) and I feel like with that tiny bit of tweaking, it has the same effect and feel as your older piece: (c) Tamberella
As I said, This may be all off, but I hope you don't mind my in-put!

Both are gorgeous :D

Also, I think this is a really interesting case study on how much color matters to people! I might even talk about it in my next color tutorial. You can get away with a lot when you have a vivid color scheme. You're definitely not alone in feeling like the color is better in the top if you scroll down the comments. Color impacts people, and I'd never abandon it as a method of storytelling! Even if I've moved away from it a step in this piece! ;)

I can totally see where you're coming from, and I understand and respect your opinion.
One of the things I've learned over the years though is an idea of restraint. I used to over rely heavily on extreme contrast and over saturated colors to give a piece impact. In fact, one of the things my teachers stressed is that I had an over reliance on contrast and saturation, and a lack of focus on construction and fundamentals. In this piece, I'm showing myself that I can practice restraint. Whether the general public agrees or not is less important to me, just in this case (I'll always want to hear from you guys!). I want to have a variety of ways to create an impact with my art, and I think these days I still utilize saturation and contrast plenty, especially in my looser works... but hopefully now more in situations that call for it, and less as a band-aid!
But in this piece, I'm leaving a record for myself of the things I've learned and the skills I've gained. I'd never delete the original, and people are welcome to prefer it. This is mainly for me :) (Smile)

I actually completely agree. The atmosphere got to take a hit when the realism was focused on. But hopefully, the artist will see this and improve even further. They are already very good!^^
